- I believe the use of layers in the stage editor is for easy manipulation
- of models and other objects while you are working..by turning off
- various layers and the objects on them you can manipulate them easier.
-
- The other method of "layers" is by composing various objects in one
- frame, rendering it and saving it, then you can load that picture as a
- backdrop picture for the next frame you render (and so forth). By
- maintaining the same camera position you will get things to line up.
-
- We did this quite extensively I remember in the early days when ram was
- a lot more expensive. By rendering various objects in separate scenes
- (frames) we were able to maximize the use of system resources. The use
- of a backdrop is a lot more efficient than loading and rendering objects
- each time. We do this a lot to create backdrops for our buildings..we
- will take some models (buidings/trees)and render them in frame 1 and
- then use that rendered image as a backdrop for the render of the
- foreground building objects (frame 2). I even remember once being forced
- into having to use a filter mask of some trees in order to cast a shadow
- on a building face rendered in a previous frame. Because of the sizes of
- our tree bitmaps I couldn't include the objects in that frame. When I
- placed the tree objects in the second frame they matched perfectly with
- the black masks seen in the first image; this way I was able to use
- Imagine to do most of the compositing needed.

- This brings to mind a question. In the old days on my Amiga, I could do
- a Quick Anim from Stage, with Quick Stage mode activated, and quickly
- get a bounding-box representation of my objects' motion. I could also
- exclude certain layers. Now, with IFW, the only way to get animation
- feedback is through the Render menu item, which is the old Project
- Editor renderer: it doesn't take layers and Quick Stage into
- consideration. Am I missing something?

- Charles,
-
- In the stage editor, look under the View menu where the perspective view
- choices are located and you will see "animate". You can do just what you
- said there.
